This past Thursday, I had the distinct pleasure of joining Dr. Sabrina Jackson on her Sizzling Talk radio show on 910 am (1am-3am) where we discussed the top health concerns of Millennials. In our discussion, I aimed to offer an out of the box viewpoint in hopes of inspiring a new thought paradigm about self-care vs. healthcare:
1. Alcohol. "Millennials, women in particular, are drinking too much." This is a celebrated recreational past time; if a celebrity does not don the bottle label as an endorsement, they have branded their own version of an alcoholic beverage. I do not entirely fault Millennials for their lack of discretion in alcohol consumption. Most of them are not even aware of the predictive programming that occurred in their teenage years which made drinking even more socially acceptable than in previous generations. In this vain, we respect Millennials as those who respond to the previous generations' skeptical and reserved nature - caution and consequence are a thing of the past for many Millennials.
Ever wondered why television "programming" has its name? Consider your influence and motivation for consumption, press pause. Is drinking even really you? Maybe not. Social media, prime time television and reality TV each celebrate drinking at every turn. Get to the heart of your matter, then drink responsibly if you must drink or not at all if you can.
Excessive alcohol consumption is extremely damaging to the body and could very well be linked to some of the concerns listed below.
2. Health Coverage. "Millennials have health insurance less often than other groups." This is a teachable area and moment for my beloved Millennials. The Medical Industrial Complex (google this folks) would have you believe that no coverage is the end of the world.
At worst, a penalty will be imposed during tax season but know this: most hospitals will not refuse emergency or trauma care - especially those which are founded on faith-based principles. Having said that, let us explore the concept of self-care and a few basic things that will help you steer clear of the need for coverage in the first place. #prevention #selfcare
Ask yourself a few questions:
- Are you hydrating with water? #goal
- Are you eating food, whole food, at least once daily? #goal
- Are you on a good vitamin/mineral supplement? #goal (Sea Essentials or Catalyn)
- Are you eliminating daily? Eating a green salad every day? #goal
- Are you avoiding detox fads? #goal
- Are you practicing prevention and "safe" everything? #goal
These simple habits will significantly reduce the need to visit the doctor. Once these simple goals are achieved, your focus can become promoting longevity. #elevate #levels
3. Mental Health. "Millennials aren't coping well with daily stress and life challenges." We discussed the increase in mental health diagnoses(depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, early onset psychosis) trending upward during which I conveyed the link between this trend and the accessibility to medical marijuana (a discussion for another time). I also discussed how the condition of the stomach is now found to have a very close link to chemical imbalance in the brain. The gut-brain connection is the subject of many studies in functional nutrition (offered in my practice) and the findings are quite promising. What does all this mean? Embedded in the wall of your gut is your enteric nervous system (ENS), which works both independently of and in conjunction with the brain in your head.
