Fertility & Pregnancy

Today I celebrate baby number 7, another mom who contacted our office to share the great news... one day past  her first trimester.  She says, "You're going to be an auntie."  At 37, she didn't think that she'd conceive but now, she's due in January, owed to the fertility and pre-conception work we've done together.  ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️💝. It's a boy!

As a mom of five, pregnancy is one thing I know a lot about.  Hence , I also know a thing or two about nurturing a healthy body before, during and after pregnancy.....

Most people rely solely on conventional medicine, and even more so when the news of pregnancy arrives. In fact, very few women consider naturopathy as a viable option for fertility, conception and beyond care.  The fact is, however, that naturopathy - when done well - ensures your pregnancy journey is a healthy one, pre-, during and post pregnancy!

Pre-Pregnancy Naturopathy

In the naturopathic mindset, pregnancy doesn't begin with the missed period or pregnancy test.  Pregnancy actually begins with the desire to conceive and therefore, a willingness to prepare your body to conceive and carry.  In essence, you're giving your baby a headstart - beginning with its new home. Here are a few things the two of you might consider in preparation for conception:

  • A fertility cleanse - cleansing the liver helps to rid the body of excess hormones and toxins in the blood and body.  Cleansing and tonifying the uterine tissue is also a great step since it helps stimulate blood flow to the uterus and also "sloughs" any excess tissue.  This can be accomplished using herbs and/or homeopathic remedies during optimal phases of the menstrual cycle.
  • A nutritive boost - vitamins and minerals are essential to preparing your body for the new life it will create and carry.  Zinc and folic acid are absolutely essential. Zinc helps to increase ovulation in women and semen production in men. Folic acid is used by the body to create red blood cells - which is supportive of the extra blood volume needed in pregnancy and for the development of baby's brain and spinal cord.  OTC supplements work but also consuming zinc-rich foods like whole grains, crab and lobster, beans and dairy products are a better option.  Citrus fruits, whole grains and leafy greens are all excellent sources of Folic Acid.
  • A good whole food multi-vitamin is great for both you and the baby.  If you're not already taking one, pre-conception is a great time to start.
  • Do your homework:  explore the benefits of calcium, magnesium and manganese for pregnancy, before, during and after.

It's A Boy!

What if you are just getting off of birth control?

The steps above are just as effective. Cleansing the liver certainly helps it metabolize synthetic hormones and remove the excess from the body. It is also recommended that you take steps to balance your hormones, which could take a year. This is not to say you won't conceive for a year, but it is highly likely that you may conceive at a time when your hormones are least likely to be in a balanced state of normalcy - which, of course, varies by the uniqueness of each of us. Focus On Flint: Natural Help for Lead Toxicity

Mercy! I am perplexed with the depth of trauma currently experienced by the children and families in Flint.  The reality of this experience hits too close to home causing grave concern on so many levels: as a mother, a neighbor, a practitioner, a friend, a colleauge and fellow social justice activist.  It pains me deeply - but I will not allow a sense of grief and helplessness to overtake me.  I challenge myself to be and do more....

I am being still and holding healing space daily for the children and families affected by this atrocity.  I am pooling resources to ensure I can impact and positively affect the outcomes for those affected by lead in the City of Flint.  I checked online to see what supportive resources or information exists which might offer any insight into any supportive natural approaches.  Virtually Nothing exists.  WEBMD lists EDTA, a chemical intravenous cocktail, as the only effective remedy to treat lead poisoning - the side effects of which I imagine to be horrifically indescribable.  Here, in my non-medical musings, I thought I'd offer some insight....

Disclaimer: This information has not been validated by the FDA and is not intended to replace the advice of a licensed medical professional.  Please seek the advice of a licensed medical professional or homeopathic/naturopathic doctor trained in the use of homeopathic remedies and/or naturopathic protocols.  Heavy Metal detoxification should only be performed under the supervision of a qualified professional.

Both Naturopathy and Homeopathy prove, time and again, to be viable and effective adjuncts to conventional, allopathic treatments.  Both are concerned with body function moreso than symptomotology.  This is a strength that helps to focus on promoting the body's ability to stabilize and heal itself.  In our practice, we advocate holistic and systemic approaches - one that works together to address the fullness of a condition.  The protocol below is an example of one approach we might use to address lead toxicity.

Nux Vomica - The use of Nux Vomica, a homeopathy remedy,  is indicated for relief of abdominal pain, cramping and general constipation when they are known to be associated with repeated lead exposure.

Calcium Bentonite Clay - It is understood that Lead displaces calcium in the body.  Using calcium bentonite clay is a great option that does not further burden the liver.  "Living" clay is a one way to use this natural method to detoxify the body.  It is made living once hydrated and can be consumed orally.   It attracts positive ions while traveling through the body, binding free radicals, toxins and other impurities to itself.   Learn more about the great job it does and the benefits of bentonite clay here.

Chlorella - This superfood is very well known as a natural detoxifier and supporter of antioxidant activity.  Chlorella is one of the top nutrients for absorption of toxic metals. This information is well known in the field of environmental toxicology, where industrial pollution threatens the survival of chlorella due to high levels of exposure. Clinical studies completed in September, 2005 prove that a heavy metal chelation formula can naturally remove an average of 87% of Lead, 91% of Mercury, and 74% of Aluminum from the body within 42 days. The study, sponsored by Baseline Nutritionals®, was conducted by healthcare professionals at The Optimal Wellness Test Research Center in Nevada.

Cilantro - This kitchen herb is capable of mobilizing mercury, cadmium, lead and aluminum in both bones and the central nervous system. Cilantro is known for its ability to mobilize more toxins than it can carry out of the body, it may flood the connective tissue (where the nerves reside) with metals, that were previously stored in safer hiding places. For this reason, it must be used in conjunction with chorella - as chorella works with Cilantro as an intestinal toxin-absorbing agent. Cilantro can be taken as a tea, tincture or topical rub on specific areas or meridians of the body.

Restorative Nutrition - Finally, a holistic approach must include restorative nutrition.  In the case of lead toxicity, supplementing with calcium and maximizing its absorption with Vitamin D,  Magnesium and Vitamin C are critical.  Increasing dietary intake of iron rich foods can also encourage healing and repair of damages tissue and cells.

We hope you find this enlightening.  This protocol and more are offered at Exhalation Integrative Wellness, where consultations are always free.  We are here to help, always.!
